How to Bet on the NFL’s AFC South

The AFC South will have an interesting mix of teams to watch in the 2022 NFL season. The AFC South's four teams are all in different positions right now:

  • The Tennessee Titans went 12-5 last year and got a first-round bye in the playoffs, but they lost in the divisional round. Running back Derrick Henry remains one of the best in the game, while quarterback Ryan Tannehill is looking to show the Titans are his team for the future.
  • The Indianapolis Colts landed Matt Ryan from Atlanta as their new quarterback, plus running back Jonathan Taylor's stock has been rising in recent years. The Colts are looking to build off a 9-8 season from last year.
  • The Houston Texans went 4-13 last year, with the team being mired in uncertainty over whether quarterback Deshaun Watson would play. The Texans traded Watson to the Cleveland Browns for several draft picks, including a few first-rounders. However, current quarterback Davis Mills may not be the best choice for the team.
  • The Jacksonville Jaguars were 3-14 last year in a season that saw coach Urban Meyer leave in disgrace midway through the season. New coach Doug Pederson is looking to rebuild the team around quarterback Trevor Lawrence and running back Travis Etienne Jr.

The AFC South will have plenty of drama this coming year, and you can bet on all four teams in many ways. Here's a look at what options are available for betting on the AFC South.

To Win the Division

You can place a bet on any of the four AFC South teams to win the division. The odds will dramatically change as the season progresses. For example, the Texans might start the season with a +2000 line, but that line could go down to +400 if they are in contention late in the season.

To Make the Playoffs

You can also wager on whether any of these teams will make the playoffs. The odds will be closer to even money as the season starts, while they will move further from even money when a team goes on an extended winning or losing streak.

Finishing Position

You can also bet on a team to finish in one of four positions if you want to be more specific on where you feel a team will finish. You might think the Colts will fall short and finish second in the AFC South, for example.

Stage of Elimination

A stage of elimination bet is when you pick how far a team will make it into the playoffs. The shortest odds for a team are typically for either missing the playoffs or losing in the wild card round. The longest odds are for predicting that a team will win or lose the Super Bowl.

Team Props

Team prop bets include wagers on what will happen to a team during the season. Some of the team props you can bet on include:

  • Which opponent will give a team its first regular season loss
  • How many wins the team will have during the regular season
  • The number of divisional games a team will win

Some of these team props are over/under wagers. For example, you could bet on the Colts to go over or under 8.5 wins for the season.

Player Props

You can also place player prop bets on players to do certain things. Some of the player prop bets include:

  • Passing, rushing, or receiving yards for a player
  • How many passing, rushing, or receiving touchdowns someone will get
  • How many passes a player will catch
  • How many interceptions a quarterback will throw
  • The number of interceptions or sacks for a defensive player

These player props are over-under wagers in most situations. You could bet on Trevor Lawrence to go over or under 22.5 touchdowns or you could bet on Lawrence to have more or fewer than 13.5 interceptions.

Odds to Win a Game

You can place a bet on a team to win a game outright throughout the season. A win bet means you are predicting a team will win the game. The favorite and the underdog will be shown by the size of the odds.

Total Points

Bettors who want to bet on a game but not pick a winner can wager on how many points the two teams will score. The total wager involves betting on the combined score at the end of the game.

You can bet on whether the total score will be over or under a certain value. For example, in a game between the Colts and the Jaguars you can bet on the total points being over or under 45.5. You can bet that the total score will be 46 or higher, or you can wager that the score will be 45 or lower.

Spread

A spread bet is another way of betting on a team to win, but it has a twist. You can bet on a favorite to cover the spread, meaning the team will win by more than the number of points shown in the bet. You could also bet against the spread and predict the underdog will win or otherwise lose by fewer points than what the spread says.

For instance, in a game between the Colts and the Texans, there may be a spread of -8.5 on the Colts. If you bet on the Colts, then you will win the bet if they win the game by at least 9 points (and cover the spread). Alternatively, you could bet on the Texans with a spread of +8.5 and you would then win the bet if they win the game or lose by no more than 8 points.

Live Bets

Live bets are also available for any AFC South game as it takes place. Many of the bets explained above will be available and the odds will change as the action unfolds. You can also bet on the next thing to happen in a game, such as on which team will score next.
