Betting on the South American Volleyball Championship

What is the South American Volleyball Championship?

The South American Volleyball Championship is organised by the Confederación Sudamericana de Voleibol, or CSV. It is the premier volleyball competition for South America and all of the national teams in the continent battle to become the champions. The competition was started in 1951, and is played every two years, a format that was set in 1967. In the 50s and early to mid-60s, the competition was held sporadically: there was a competition in 1951, 1956, 1958, 1961, 1962, 1964 and then 1967. Since then, the competition has consistently taken place every two years.

From all 34 competitions to date, Brazil has won 33, losing in the finals once to Argentina in 1964, when the competition was held in Buenos Aires. Brazil has set an extremely high standard and as a result, the competition is always thrilling to watch and features some of the most talented volleyball players in the world.

The competition is played by 8 countries, who also rotate hosting duties every two years. The countries that compete are Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, Uruguay, Chile, Paraguay, Colombia and Peru. Argentina is the second most successful team after Brazil, winning one gold, nineteen silver and eight bronze medals. They are followed by Venezuela with ten silver and twelve bronze medals.

The national teams feature players who play in their boyhood teams, national teams and some players who play in leagues abroad. The Most Valuable Player award was initiated in 2007, and has only been won by Brazilian players. The MVP award has been given to the following players: Gilberto Godoy Filho, Murilo Endres, Sergio Santos (twice), Sidnei Santos, Mauricio Borges Silva, Alan Souza and Bruno Rezende.

How to Bet on the South American Volleyball Championship

The South American Volleyball Championship is a hugely anticipated event that features all the best players in the continent and always promises excitement and drama. The competition usually lasts only 4 or 5 days, into which all the action and thrilling games are packed.

There are many options for fans who want to bet on the tournament. Betting options range from the simplest bets such as who will win the game, to more specific bets, such as how many points a single player scores in the game.

Outrights

Outright bets are those that deal with the tournament as a whole. The most common bet is on a team to win the competition, and these can be placed well ahead of time. These bets are available long before the competition starts and the odds may be more favourable when betting in advance.

Match Winner

The most straightforward bet is definitely the most popular bet. When two teams face each other, a bet can be placed on either team to win. The team that has the shorter odds will be the favourite to win, and the team with the longer odds is the underdog.

Set Winner

Volleyball is usually played in a best of five set format, and the first two sets can be pivotal to the outcome. Whilst games can last up to the full five sets, usually the matches are concluded in three or four sets. When betting, it's possible to break up a match into each set, and there are bets that can be placed on which team will win the first or second set. These bets offer good odds and pay out quicker than full match bets, making them an attractive option for punters.

Handicap Bets

When betting on a team to win, there is the option to lengthen the odds with handicaps. Handicaps can be placed on how many points the team needs to win by in a set or on how many sets the team needs to win in a game.

When putting a handicap on the number of points a team will need to win by in a given set, the odds become longer when the handicap is set at larger values such as -9.5, -10.5 and more.

Handicaps on sets are more limited as there are not many sets in a match. When setting a -1.5 set handicap on a team, this will mean the team needs to finish the game either 3-0 or 3-1. A handicap of -2.5 is the maximum that can be placed on “best of five sets” format games. This will mean the team will have to win in straight sets, or 3-0.

There are also positive handicaps on both points in a set or on sets in a game. These can be placed on the underdog team to reduce the risk, but will shorten the odds.

Over/Under Bets

These bets are not directly affected by which team wins the game. There are markets such as total number of points scored in a game, how many sets will be played and more. These are two way bets, where a number is given by the market, such as a total of 175.5 points to be scored in a match. Punters can then bet on there being more than 175.5 points (over) or less than 175.5 points (under).

Many More Bets

There are many more bets available that can create excitement out of every small detail in each game. Bets such as will a team win the game after losing the first two sets, a team to win in straight sets, correct score after the first two sets and more. It is worth taking the time to explore all of the markets carefully as there are always some exciting opportunities to be found.
