The tournament was initially contested between 32 clubs. This then increased to 40 in 1996 and 69 in 2000. Between 2001 and 2012, 64 clubs took part from all 26 Brazilian states and the Federal District. Today, 92 teams participate.

Since 2013, teams that compete in the Copa Libertadores join the Copa do Brasil directly in the Round of 16. Furthermore, the best 8 teams from the previous year’s Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A eliminated up to the third round qualify for the Copa Sudamericana.

Cruzeiro is the most successful club in the competition having won it six times. They are followed by Gremio, which has won it 5 times, Palmeiras at 4, then Corinthians and Flamengo at 3. Atletico Minerio won 2 and another ten clubs have won it one time each. In total, there have been 16 different champions.

In regards to states, Sao Paulo is the most successful with 10 titles. Rio de Janeiro is the only city that has more than two champion clubs, Flamengo, Fluminense and Vasco da Gama.

The competition is a knockout tournament with two-legged ties. In the first two rounds, if the away team wins the first match by at least 2 goals, then they will progress directly to the next round without the second leg being played.

Goal Handicap

Very often there is a favourite to win a football match. This means that the odds are small and there isn’t the chance to win a great deal. However, the handicap markets offer far larger odds as they assign a goal handicap to the favourite team that must be overcome.

For example, Palmeiras -1.5, America Mineiro +1.5

If you bet on Palmeiras, then you win the bet if they win by at least 2 goals. If you bet on America Mineiro, then you win the bet if they win or lose by no more than 1 goal.

Exact Score

As the name suggests, this is a bet on the exact score. You are given several options to choose from. For example, you could bet on Sao Paulo to beat Flamengo 1-0, 2-1, 3-0, and so on.

Goalscorer

This gives you the chance to back your favourite players to score a goal. For example, you could bet on Victor Vinicius Coelho dos Santos to score a goal if Flamengo were playing.

Draw No Bet

This requires you to bet on a team to win. If the game then ends in a draw you will receive your bet back.
