The Kimberley Diamond Cup was founded in 2013, replacing the Maloof Money Cup World Championships, which were held in 2011 and 2012. It was named the Kimberley Diamond Cup after the location and also in part because Kimberley was the home of the first diamond mine in South Africa, the city itself is called the "Diamond City".
